Your path to an
Australian work visa

The Australian government offers individuals and their families a variety of visa options for temporary, long-term, or permanent work and residence permits. The demand for skilled workers in Australia is high. Not only academic, but also (or especially) skilled trades are in high demand and have good prospects of obtaining an Australian visa!

The points-based visa classes are particularly suitable for qualified professionals, as they often lead to permanent residency with a work permit. These visa classes are also independent of a specific employer or job and offer visa holders and their families maximum freedom in how they want to organize their lives in Australia. The Australian government determines which professions and qualifications are in short supply in Australia and publishes them on corresponding lists. In addition, individual Australian states can create their own lists of skilled workers. These lists are continually revised and updated.

An Overview of the Various
Australian Work Visas

Several paths lead to long-term or even permanent residency with a work permit, known as permanent residency. A job offer is not necessarily required for this. If you have a profession for which there is a high demand in Australia, you can obtain a work visa even without a specific job offer. The advantage of these employer-independent visas: They allow for a greater degree of flexibility in terms of jobs and employment and better meet the goals of most permanent expatriates than the usually temporary visas tied to a specific employer (sponsorship). Those who have received a permanent visa based on their qualifications are not bound to actually practicing the profession they have trained in, but are completely free to choose their career. Self-employment and starting their own business are also possible this way.

These visas differ primarily in the following respects:
Visa Eligibility by Occupation and State

Each visa class encompasses different occupations that qualify for the respective visa. In cases where the visa is tied to an Australian state, additional conditions may be imposed by the respective state.

The Global Talent Program: A Pathway for High Achievers

A relatively new and interesting option for obtaining permanent residency in Australia is the Global Talent Program, which is aimed at potential immigrants who have an above-average academic PhD degree or an above-average career path in specific industries/sectors.

Understanding Permanent Residency and Travel Rights

Permanent Residency Visas have one thing in common: They allow the visa holder to stay in Australia permanently. However, for international travel, a Resident Return Visa must be applied for after five years in order to be allowed to re-enter Australia.

Work visas with a specific job offer (employer sponsorship)

If you have already convinced an Australian employer and received a concrete job offer, further visa options are available through employer sponsorship. If an employer agrees to formally support your visa application, separate visas are available for this purpose. However, each visa class is subject to different requirements regarding the activity performed or place of residence.

Temporary stays and permanent residency are possible through this route. However, the temporary options involve a commitment to the sponsoring employer and job. These visas also require you to have an occupation on the relevant needs list, but the points test does not apply to them.

Other Short-Term Work Visas

If the requirements for a long-term work visa are not met from the outset, or if only a short stay in Australia is planned, other visa options may be available. With the exception of the Work and Travel visa, these visa classes also require a specific professional or qualification background.

Each visa class is associated with different requirements regarding the activity or place of residence. Therefore, you should carefully consider which visa is suitable for you and your planned project.
